Jonathan Edward Bernthal (born September 20, 1976) is an American actor. He is known for his roles as Shane Walsh in the AMC post-apocalyptic horror series The Walking Dead (2010–2012), Frank Castle / Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television series Daredevil (2015–2018) and The Punisher (2017–2019), and Joe Teague in the USA Network neo-Western series The Tax Collector (2020).
Bernthal was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Cabin John, Maryland. He graduated from Skidmore College in 1999 with a degree in theater. After graduation, he moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow Art Theatre School.
Bernthal returned to the United States in 2002 and began his acting career. He made his television debut in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2002. He went on to appear in a number of other television shows, including Boston Legal, CSI: Miami, and How I Met Your Mother.
In 2010, Bernthal was cast as Shane Walsh in the AMC post-apocalyptic horror series The Walking Dead. The show became a huge hit, and Bernthal's portrayal of Shane Walsh was widely praised. He left the show in 2012 after his character was killed off.
In 2015, Bernthal was cast as Frank Castle / Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television series Daredevil. The show was a critical and commercial success, and Bernthal's performance was widely praised. He reprised the role in the spin-off series The Punisher, which premiered in 2017.
In addition to his work on television, Bernthal has also appeared in a number of films, including The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Fury (2014), Sicario (2015), and Baby Driver (2017).
